Dr. James Welwood enjoyed reputations as a physician and as an historian. Of these Memoirs, the author of the entry in Biblioteca Britannica notes it is “an excellent work, betraying, however, much party spirit.” Extra-illustrated for Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke (1656 – 1733), this copy remained in the Pembroke library untils its public sale by Sotheby’s on March 15 – 17, 1920. This copy appears as Lot 201. The first public sale of the Pembroke library was on June 23, 1914. Since the sale in 1920, this copy travelled first to Scotland, then to the United States, where it was in a private collection.
