Valentine. German, ca. 1850 A hand-made Valentine’s card 8 cm x 6 cm, with a German verse below a hand-painted garland of roses around a burning heart, painted on cloth, then mounted on paper with an embossed gilt border. No date, nor signature. Fine.
“Wenn freundschaft sich die hande reicht,
Dann is der Weg durch’s leben leicht.
Wo Lieb‘ und Treu‘ im Herzen wohnt,
Da wird mit Erdenglück gelohnt.”
(Translated: When friendship is enough,
Then the way through living is easy.
Where Love and Faithful dwell in the heart,
