Description

[Orsini, Cesare], Stopinus-Magister, Magistri Stopini Poetae Ponzanensis Capriccia Macaronica. Perillustri Domino Carulo Alciato., Venetiis: Apud Iacobum Sarzinam, 1636. Signed on the title page by  Iacques Boldñi (?).  In-12, 166 pages.

In eight  sections: De Malitiis putanarum, Laudes de Arte robbandi, De Laudibus ignorantiae, De Laudibus pazziae, De Laudibus bosiae, Gattam Rosam a milite interfectam deplorat, Lamentatio de Pograga et Chiagra, Contentio Trium Poetarum Nizzus, Bertoldus, et Drias, Epigrammata eiusdem, Liber elegiarum (De Carminibus, & amoribus suis, De puellae crudelitate, Ad Amorem, Ad Amorem, Ad Morinam, Ad Morinam, Ad Musam, De Boni vini effectibus, De Morte avari, Ad Eustachium Rudium medicum equitem, Ad Franciscum corriedanum, Ad Marcum boncompagnum).

One of the macaronic poets, Magister Stopinus, enjoyed the safety of his pseudonym as well as the protection of his employer Card. Bevilaqua, to whom he acted as secretary.  Graesse cites this edition as appearing in the same year as the first printing at Padua. Techner, in his Bulletin du Bibliophile, 1842, remarks on the places in the verses where dots replace words: « Mauvaise méthod; car l’imagination de lecteur complete les phrases mutilées d’une façon plus hardie et plus libre que ne l’aurait fait l’auteur. » (See B3, C5, E5(b), E8, F6(b).) Libreria Vinciana (3164) states that this edition is after that of Ganassam, Padua, 1636.

Original soft vellum binding, 136 mm x 76 mm, printer’s device with a quote from I Corinthians 13:5 as a motto, Non quaerit quae sua sunt,  over a single burning candle, on the title page. The burning candle replaces the word Charitas. The copy shows wear, evidence of having been read frequently but is — overall — a very good early copy of this title.
