Description
Hazard, Samuel. Santo Domingo Past & Present with a Glance at Hayti. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, Franklin Square, 1873. 22 cm., first edition, [xxix; 1 leaf, 511 pages; ii advertisements]. A preliminary bibliography of nine pages lists sources from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The large fold-out map was compiled from the one ordered by the Dominican Government in 1858, “… from the surveys and data of Baron Schomburgh and the French engineer Mendez …”. There is also a plan of Samana Bay. Full-page engravings have tissue guards. Numerous other text illustrations. Bound in gilt-stamped brown cloth. This copy is signed “Belknap,” by Col. Morris B. Belknap (1856 – 1910), a native Kentuckian, educated at Yale, who served in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. Foot of the spine bumped, corners slightly scuffed, otherwise a very good, unusually tight copy.
