Truman, President Harry S. A typed letter signed by Harry S. Truman, as President of the United States to J. Howard McGrath, Oct. 26, 1946, 1 page, on blue White House stationery, 8 7/8 in x 7 in. A letter of good content and to a recipient with strong political association with President Truman. McGrath had been Governor of Rhode Island from 1941 to 1945 and was appointed Solicitor General of the United States by President Truman in October 1945. McGrath went on to serve as a United States Senator from Rhode Island from 1947 to 1949 and as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1948, where he helped secure President Truman’s election in his own right. President Truman named McGrath as the Attorney General of the United States in 1949, a position he held until April 1952, when controversy over the handling of an investigation into corruption in the Department of Justice forced President Truman to ask for his resignation. At the date of this letter, McGrath had just tendered his resignation as Solicitor General, in order to run for a Senate seat. Presidential letters to such high-level Administration officials are uncommon. The letter bears a date-received stamp at the upper right, but is otherwise fine. This Truman signature is full, strong, and dark. The original unstamped White House envelope is included and is slightly soiled.
