Binding signed [George] “Bayntun Binder Bath, Eng.” First issue of first edition, as originally published in Ainsworth’s Magazine February to November 1842, original parts bound together in one volume. Cover of the October 1842 issue of Ainsworth’s Magazine bound in after the title-page. 8vo. Repaginated by hand (on the recto only): Part I: 1 – 120; Part II: Contents page for July, 1842 issue, 121 – 182; Part III: Contents page for November, 1842, 183 – 292. Twenty etchings by George Cruikshank, and numerous woodcuts not in later book edition. Cohn 17, but this edition is not mentioned by Cohn. (Cohn lists Ainsworth’s Magazine under Cohn 22.) An untrimmed copy, 23.5 cm, half-scarlet gilt-ruled morocco over scarlet linen. Top edge gilt. Five raised bands, spine panels mitred, cornered, with center-tooling, lettering all in gilt. Front hinge repaired. Interior fine, some slight foxing to edges of etchings. Manuscript note in ink: “The Miser’s Daughter from The First Vol. of Ainsworth’s Magazine 1842-3 20 etchings by G.C. The woodcuts in Ainsworth do not appear in the issue of the Book. Special Title, ordy-Title & Cover of Mag – Uncut”.
