Description
Margul-Sperber, Alfred, Geheimnis und Verzicht Gedichte. Cernăuti, Rumänien: Literaria, 1939. Exemplar Nr. 177 of 500. (“Exemplaren bei Tipografia, ‘Sebastian’ Bucureşti VI, Rumänien.”) Printed dedication: “Den herren von Flondor in Storojineti dankbar und verehungdvoll zugeeignet, im gedenken an meinen vater.“ 86 pages followed by the “Inhalt” listing the poems in “Geheimnis”, “Verzicht” and “Das Mythenbuch”, the most notable of which is the last poem, “Der Neger Jessy Owens erläuft den Olympiarekord”. First edition. Black cloth, spine sunned, with the original black paper wrapper bound in. This copy is signed and inscribed in ink on the title-page: “Für Rosa und Heinrich Schechter in alter herzlichen Verbündenheit Freddy.” Minimal restoration has been done to the title-page, which was torn, then mended with old Scotch tape, now removed with no loss of text. An extraordinary surviving signed and inscribed good copy of a book of poetry (“Mystery and Renunciation”) published in exile by one of Hitler’s very out-spoken opponents, one who dared to criticize him in print.
