James Ensor (1860 – 1949). Masques scandalisés – The Offended Maskers. 1895. An etching printed on an untrimmed sheet 27.2 cm x 22.2 cm, image plate 11.6 cm x 7.8 cm, titled and signed in the plate. Made after Ensor’s painting of the same title of 1883, this etching is a reversed image of the painting, with the woman entering from the left in this etching. Ensor made a pencil and black chalk sketch in 1883 which shows the woman entering from the right, as in the painting. Condition fine, untrimmed, matted without adhesive and unframed.
