Each volume records the hagiographical iconography of Italian painting up to the sixteenth century. The subject matter is presented historically, with respect to facts and the growth of the saint’s legend and the representation of that legend in painting. The text is supported by full documentation and bibliography drawn from original sources. Each book consists of two parts. Part I is divided into chapters, each bearing a number and arranged in the alphabetical order of the names of the saints. The facts of the saint are given according to the Roman martyrology, the liturgical office of the saint or his/her legend and its representation in painting, and to not necessarily agree with historical truth or probability. They include name, condition, whether or not the saint be a martyr, and if a martyr, the nature of the martyrdom, the martyr’s religious order, if any; places of and dates of birth and death if known, main events of the saint’s life, relatives, (if there be also other saints in the family); the date of the saint’s canonization, if it is before 1500; the saint’s feast-day, where this does not coincide with the date of the saint’s death; dates of the saint’s translation and invention of relics; location of the saint’s tomb and relics; the city where he may be the patron. There follows the physical Type of the saint, as established in painting. Attributes and Inscriptions on scrolls or books held by the saint. The representations in painting are placed under the headings: Image, Cycles and Scenes. For each painting cited, there is a bibliographical reference under the heading “Images Where Published” or “Scenes Where Published”. Part II consists of five indices: Index of Attributes and distinctive Signs; Topographical Index; Index of Painters and Schools; Bibliographical Index and Index of the Saints.
