Green, Rosalie; Evans, Michael; Bischoff, Christine; Curschmann, Michael; Herrad of Hohenberg Hortus Deliciarum. London: The Warburg Institute / University of London; Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1979. (Studies of the Warburg Institute, XXXVI). [xiii; 244 pages, 360 figures; xxxiii, 508 pages, 154 plates, plus 19 additional plates]
This is a reconstruction of the manuscript of Herrad, the abbess of the convent of Hohenberg, which was destroyed in the Prussian bombardment of Strasbourg in 1870. The first volume is commentary, and the second is the reconstruction from a collection of all records, presented in an orderly fashion that restores the integrity of the manuscript.
Page size is 34.5 cm x 24 cm, and whatever survives of Herrad’s florilegium is placed on facing or intervening pages. All miniatures of which colored copies exist are shown in color. The major element of the Commentary is the catalogue of the miniatures compiled by Dr. Green. For a full description of this important two-volume title, see The Art Bulletin. March 1982, Volume LXIV, Number 1, pp. 142-145, review-article by Ernst Kitzinger. Bound in gray cloth with brown stamped lettering on front covers and spines of both volumes. Slight soiling to edges, but still a very good copy of both volumes.
