Description

République Françoise. Département d’Indre st Loire. District de Loches. Extrait du registre des Déliberations du Directoire du District de Loches. Séance publique du [duodi Messidor l’an 2ie] de la République Françoise, une et indivisible. Engraved official letter form partially engraved on bluish laid paper, 30 cm, manuscript annotations on both sides of one sheet of paper, with the official red wax seal of the Département de Loches with “Marianne,” the national personification  of Liberty, in Roman-style clothing, standing above “République Françoise.”  Chosen deliberately to signify a break with the old royal regime of kings and promote republican ideology, Marianne had become the female allegory of the First French Republic by the date of this Extract from the register of Deliberations of the Directory of the District of Loches, July 2, 1793. The paper of this document is still strong but shows worming not affecting the text. There is creasing which does not affect readability, with one minor chip off the edge of the lower margin without text loss. The red wax seal is cracked  and almost entirely intact, with lettering still legible, with the figure of Marianne recognizable. Written hastily and in a rough hand, this is a legal record of a criminal proceeding that records indictments that were delivered by Citizen Bomeau to the district administrator and commissioner about the measurements of quantities of grain and their destination during the harvest of 1792. Signed multiple times. Among the signatures is Pottier, Commisaire du Directoire exécutif près le Tribunal Correctionnel de Loches, the mayor, Joseph Gouron, and the National Agent, whose signature is illegible.
