Description
Schubert, Franz 1797-1828. A needlepoint, oval bust portrait in silhouette, black on white, with a facsimile of his signature below the portrait, also in black. 9 ¼ inches tall x 7 inches wide. Darkened with age, some staining around the edges from an acidic pasteboard backing. Not dated or signed, but believed to be late nineteenth century.
Schubert established himself in the pantheon of musical giants in the incredibly short span of about fifteen years. The distinctive gifts which astound even today are his uncanny ability to create a tonal context for the words of a poet, using unforgettable melodies. This portrait has him wearing his legendary eyeglasses.
