Felicien Rops, Detritus humain ou La fille du régiment. (“Human Detritus or The Daughter of the Regiment”) Original drawing of a woman in a state of disheveled undress reclining on a divan, looking at the viewer in a pose that indicates she is between sexual encounters. Black and brown chalk and some graphite on papier calque lined with white wove paper, 6 7/8 in x 9 in (17.5 cm x 22.8 cm). Collection mark lower right-hand corner, “386”. Exsteens 386, Rouir 816.
A print related to this drawing served as an illustration in La misère sociale editions Devambez, Paris, 1910. In Felicien Rops von Rudolf Klein, Band II, p. 8, a print variant of this image is reproduced under the caption “Menschliche Trümmer,” Berlin: Otto Beckman Verlag. The 1998 Winter Exhibition Catalogue for the Shepherd Gallery in New York, Félicien Rops 1833 – 1898 Drawings for Prints, No. 19. The corners of the drawing have been previously restored.
