Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company. Tourist’s Handbook Descriptive of Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Published under the auspices of the passenger department of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. On the lap-edged front cover is printed “Compliments of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company, Scenic Line of the World.” New York: the American Bank Note Company, 1887. 8 ½ in x 6 1/8 in. 56 pages, followed by 13 pages of advertisements. The paper wrapper is decorated with color lithographed scenes depicting “crags, peaks and parks” of Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. With an introduction by S. K. Hooper, registrar of the handbook at the Library of Congress and the General Passenger and Ticket Agent in Denver. A secondary decorated paper wrapper was added over the original publisher’s wrapper, protecting the cover and handbook in fine condition. Sold with a large, engraved map 14 ½ in x 17 ½ in, of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad System, printed by Rand McNally & Co., Chicago, showing lines in operation, lines under construction, projected lines and stagecoach roads. There is a smaller inset map in the lower left-hand corner showing the main lines in operation all the way to San Francisco, California. The map is in fine condition. Sold together.
