Cruikshank, George, My Sketch Book. Designed, etched, and published by George Cruikshank, 23 Myddleton Terrace, Pentonville, and sold by Charles Tilt, 86 Fleet Street. Dec. 1st, 1834. First edition of the first four parts.
Part I, yellow paper wrappers, with design, advertisement on the back for Phrenological Sketches, 4 plates interlined; Part II, yellow paper wrappers matching Part I, four plates, the first has the artist’s imprint with the date 1833 added, the second and third plates are undated, and the fourth is dated August 15th, 1833, advertisement on the back for Illustrations of Demonology and Witchcraft; Part III, yellow paper wrappers as for Parts I and II, also four plates like Parts I and II, advertisements identical to Part II (This copy has a chip out of the back cover of part III, no loss of image or text.); Part IV, the wrappers for Part III were used, with a “4” written by hand over the “III”, four plates, which are not numbered, as Cohn suggests they are, but all are dated April 1, 1834, with a one-page insert prefacing the plates about Cruikshank’s troubles with Mr. Kidd and his recent publication Cruikshank at Home.
Condition of parts I and II is only fair: light foxing throughout, covers of Parts II and III loose; Parts III and IV slightly better, but still only fair condition. Volume IV has the signature of Mr. George Drinkwater. Volume III also has the signature of G. Drinkwater, Green St., These first four parts were never bound and are as originally issued by the publisher. Cohn 181.
