Chamisso, Adelbert von, Peter Schlemihl: From the German of Adelbert von Chamisso: Translated by Sir John Bowring, LL.D., with plates by George Cruikshank, third edition, London, Robert Hardwicke, 1861. 19 cm, 122 pages, 8 plates by George Cruikshank. Plates printed on India paper, then mounted on heavier paper, with page numbers penciled in. Cohn lists the first edition attributed to LaMotte-Fouque under No. 475, but this edition is not mentioned. In his preface to the third edition, Bowring states that more than 20 years earlier he translated the work with the “advantage of the pen and the genius of George Cruikshank to make the work popular…”.
Beautiful binding signed “Brentano’s New York” in 3/4 levant, now sunned, on marbled boards, top page edge gilt. Front cover slightly scuffed, otherwise a near-fine copy of this scarce edition. See also Die Bilderwelt im Kinderbuch, 2187.
