Description
[Dali, Salvador] Carl Van Vechten, Salvador Dali, 29 November 1934. 24.5 cm x 16.5 cm. Not matted and not framed. A silver gelatin print of Salvador Dalí (1904 – 1989) made in New York in 1934, with the photographer’s studio stamp on the back: Photograph by Carl Van Vechten 146 Central Park West. Docketed as “Salvador Dalí 29 November 1934 XVIII G” in pencil above the studio stamp. This is an extraordinary early portrait of the legendary Catalan artist. Taken at the age of thirty, this image was only three years after The Persistence of Memory (1931). The backdrop behind Dalí in this image is decorated with a pattern of penguins – suitably surreal. The condition of this original Van Vechten portrait is fine, noting it has not been restored or conserved.
