Genthe, Arnold. Photographic Portrait of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Signed by the Photographer. Silver gelatin print, 24 cm x 14.2 cm, signed by the photographer in black ink “Arnold Genthe” in the lower right-hand corner, with a partially legible number under his signature, possibly “ ’17.” Genthe immigrated to San Francisco in 1895, it is probable that this image was taken shortly thereafter during one of Paderewski’s many visits to California between 1892 and 1917, during which time Paderewski acquired thousands of acres of land near San Francisco. Paderewski (1860 – 1941) is seen in this image as a young man, from the waist up, hands folded, holding a cigarette. The condition is very good for this vintage signed print, with some solarization around the edges. This image shows Paderewski as he looked in a companion image at the Library of Congress: Call Number LC-G4085-0407,<P&P>.
