Description

Capon, Charles R., Cartographer. A Map of Old Boston in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Presented by the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank 30 School Street Boston. Boston: The Sherrill Press, 1929. Folded twice into a colored paper wrapper measuring 9 ¾ in x 12 ¾ in, the brightly colored map opens to 18 ¼ in x 24 ½ in. The wrapper-folder of this classic example of financial services advertising has a nostalgic public note on the verso of the front cover to “Dear Old Boston,” and, on the inside of the back cover an exhortation from the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank to save, advertising a depositor could open an account with a deposit of five cents. The wrapper-cover has signs of wear, some edges chipped, but the map has been protected and is in very good condition. Cover design signed by Charles R. Capon, as “C.R.C.” A prior owner has written his name, “Eugenio T. Valletta,” in pencil at the top of the front wrapper.
